This sketch was part of my early practice in learning freehand drawing on heavyweight paper using pencils. The ring depicted here is inspired by the iconic Phantom comic character — a symbol worn by the Phantom that leaves its distinctive mark. The exercise became both a study of form and a small tribute to a character that was part of my childhood imagination.Pencil Sketch on Paper

Ram V Subbarayan was born in Tamil Nadu, India, and grew up in Bangalore, where an early love for the outdoors and observation of everyday life shaped his creative outlook. During his school years, he first explored painting through watercolors, developing a fascination with color, light, and form.
After a long break while pursuing his professional career, Ram returned to painting as a creative outlet, experimenting with acrylics after moving to the United States in 2011. In 2023, he began studying art more intentionally, working with oil pastels and oil paints and refining his technique through formal classes.
His work is inspired by the dramatic use of light and shadow seen in the works of Caravaggio and the Renaissance masters, including Michelangelo, as well as the expressive color and atmosphere of the Impressionists, particularly Claude Monet. Through his paintings, Ram explores quiet moments, architecture, and everyday scenes, seeking to capture the interplay of light, texture, and mood.
Today, his practice focuses primarily on oil painting, blending classical inspiration with personal observations and contemporary subjects.

Art often begins with a quiet moment of connection. If you would like to inquire about a painting, prints, or future work, I’d be glad to hear from you.
